Today’s Nintendo Direct showed an official trailer for the long-awaited release, followed by a tweet from Xbox studio Rare confirming that the game is also coming to Xbox Game Pass. However, the tweet doesn’t mention that the Xbox edition will be No receiving online multiplayer, which has been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch.

The remaster will feature improved graphics, increased frame rates, and 16:9 native 4K resolution on Xbox. Local split-screen multiplayer will also be a feature for up to four players, but online multiplayer has so far only been announced for the Nintendo release. Online multiplayer on Nintendo Switch Online is a system-level feature that allows any classic game in the N64 library that had local multiplayer features to play online through virtualized emulation.
No release date has been confirmed as of yet, but this announcement comes 25 years after the original release, and fans will be excited to have all the speculation from the past few months confirmed by official sources. The announcement has been somewhat clouded by the fact that online multiplayer is a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Bringing virtualized online multiplayer features to classic games on Xbox would require additional investments in the Xbox backwards compatibility system, which has been paused for now.
