CNN don lemon bid an emotional farewell to his audience on Friday night after nearly a decade as a prominent face of the network’s primetime lineup.
The host shared a montage of his time behind the desk and in the field from 10 pm to midnight ET over the past eight and a half years. Lemon rose to fame in early 2014 during the fading of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
On his last prime-time show, he aired coverage of the mystery and a montage of much of his reporting since. Lemon covered elections, political bombings, riots, mass shootings, scandals, hurricanes and a attack in the United States Capitol.
Lemon concluded the video and thanked those who shared kind words with him after the death from her sister in 2018. She also thanked the crew members who kept her show going.
“I wasn’t always perfect, because no one is perfect,” he said. “There are immense pressures that come with this job and in particular this 10:00 sharp schedule when people go to bed. So sometimes all I could do, I’ll be honest with you, was just smile and hit the commercial break every once in a while.”
He added:
Sometimes it was exhausting. Because some of the things that we discuss here are so personal and so absorbing, absorbing. So, I hope I made you proud. And I thank you for tuning in all these years. And I hope you’ll join me in the morning.
So I’ll just say good night and see you soon.
“Okay, so I’m going to go and go upstairs,” Lemon said. She left the desk, went up a flight of stairs and sobbed.
“Goodbye,” she said one last time as she groaned, fighting back tears.
