To update [Tue 28th Jun, 2022 17:30 BST]: Sega has shared more details after the Direct on Sonic Frontiers (thanks, nintendo everything!). This includes new abilities, specific enemy types, and a new character named Sage.

We also have more confirmation that Tails and Amy will be involved in some way!

Here’s all the new info from Sega:

History
Sonic’s new journey begins as he and his friends, Amy and Tails, head to the Starfall Islands in search of Chaos Emeralds. As they approach the islands, sudden trouble hits their plane and they are sucked into a dimensional portal. Sonic then finds himself separated from his friends and wakes up in a strange digital world: cyberspace. He miraculously escapes from Cyberspace and arrives at Kronos Island, one of the Starfall Islands, full of ancient ruins where strange enemies roam. Then it’s up to Sonic to explore the Starfall Islands, find his lost friends, and uncover the mysteries that surround him.

Starfall Islands
The first island that Sonic explores is Kronos Island. Its terrain and climate see frequent rains, large waterfalls, lush forests, mountains and towers floating in the air. The ruins scattered around the island seem to be the houses of the former inhabitants: the Koco.

Cyberspace
The entrances to cyberspace made by the ancient civilization of Starfall Islands can be found all over the map. Sonic fans will solve puzzles and complete challenges to earn Portal Gears to unlock these entrances and access Cyber Space levels featuring traditional, fast-paced, speed action platforming. They will have to complete the challenges in each Cyber Space level to receive Vault Keys to progress further in the game.

open area platforms
Players can enjoy high-speed gameplay in an open area and interact with various activities on the island however and wherever they want. Experience exciting combat, puzzles, side quests, cyberspace, and conversations with characters from across the island in any order you like to match your play style.

World of games
Sonic Frontiers expands on what fans know and love about traditional Sonic games, blending linear level play and open-zone platforming into an all-new action-packed Sonic adventure. The world map is larger than ever, giving Sonic more room to run around and explore his surroundings, allowing him to evolve the land around him as he ventures deeper into the mysteries of the Starfall Islands.

battle system
Sonic’s combat style is more exhilarating and fluid than ever. Players can use various button controls to fight strategically, combining moves such as dodge, parry, counter, and more into various combos to showcase battle skills unlocked throughout the game. If you prefer simpler gameplay, the game also has an auto mode where you can execute multiple attack combos with a single button. All Sonic fans can easily enjoy the fast and fluid combat system.

New Cyloop ability
Sonic learns a new ability called “Cyloop”, creating a band of light that reflects Sonic’s footprints. He circles enemies, items, and areas to discover his various effects and unlock the secrets of Starfall Islands.

Puzzle
There are various puzzles to solve in the ancient ruins of Starfall Islands. Completing each puzzle can award items to increase Sonic’s power and defense, reveal hidden parts of the map, and unlock new ways to navigate the island at high speeds.

play styles
When you first start the game, you can choose between two player control styles: action style and high speed style. Action Style helps with more precise platforming, ideal for players new to Sonic games. High Speed Style offers more speed, ideal for players used to Sonic titles.

characters
Sonic the Hedgehog
The fastest supersonic hedgehog in the world. Sonic’s adventure begins on the Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds and his lost friends. He is also guided by a strange voice on the way.

Wise
A mysterious girl who appears in the Starfall Islands. Throughout the story, she warns Sonic to leave the Starfall Islands despite her mission to find and save his friends.

Enemies
The Starfall Islands are home to strange creatures that Sonic has never seen before. Players will need to make use of the new battle system and abilities to defeat these strange new enemies.

SOLDIER: This enemy appears in groups and attacks with stabbing movements with both hands.
CYCLONE: A floating enemy that deals damage with attacks that look like electrical tornadoes.

BANGER – A wheel-shaped enemy that dashes towards Sonic once spotted and attacks at high speed if provoked.

SHELL: Enemy protected by a hard shell that attacks from a distance with a boomerang-type movement. Sonic’s attacks can’t penetrate the hard shell, but other methods like Cyloop can catch this enemy off guard.
B.
UBBLE: An enemy made up of a group of spheres that attacks Sonic with electricity.

bosses
NINJA: An enemy with high-speed attacks reminiscent of its namesake’s fighting style. He can block incoming attacks and attack with shadows of himself.

ASURA: A large enemy that looks like a tall building. He climbs up the arm he throws down to find his weakness at the top and attack.

Original article[Tue 28th Jun, 2022 15:00 BST]: We’ve already had plenty of speedy sonic frontiers trailers this month, but today’s Nintendo Direct Mini gave us an extra insight into what to expect from Blue Blur’s open-zone game.

Today’s trailer gave us our first look at the game running on the Switch, and it looks surprisingly smooth! While the new trailer didn’t show much new stuff, we did get to see some of the weather effects, more combat, and more of Sonic just running around vast open fields, collecting rings, and climbing towers.

There was also a hint of Eggman’s presence, with what looks like a mechanical building with the nefarious doctor’s logo plastered on the side.

The biggest reveal is a new area called ‘Cyber Space’ that will hide challenges for you to complete. Some of the levels in this area appear to be based on levels from Sonic’s history, with one area based on Green Hill and something that resembles Metal Harbor from sonic adventure 2. Here you will unlock keys that will help you progress further, whether it be in the main story or just to unlock more challenges, we will have to wait and see.

Sonic Frontiers will be released later this year on Switch. Did today’s trailer impress you? Go quickly to the comments!
