Yesterday, Apple revealed Would expand its Self-Service Repair program to let you fix your own MacBooks, and today the program is here. You can now download complete repair manuals for your 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 and 2020 MacBook Air M1, and shop for the parts you may need.
But what will Apple actually let you buy, and how much will you pay? Really you have to pay? That’s not obvious until you enter your serial numbers and search all company store So we did it for you.

Many prices seem (relatively) generous! Others, not so much. You can’t just replace your own battery or keyboard on a MacBook Pro, for example! You have to buy the entire top cap that comes with that and other parts pre-installed, and it will cost you more than twice the $199 Apple charges for battery replacement. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

and while you they can replace just the battery in your MacBook Air 2020 M1, you’ll have to spend $39, the same price as a full set of keys, to replace the broken keys in your feature row. That could be because Apple sends Seven sets of Fn keys at once:
Motherboard prices are particularly interesting. apple not only does not allow you to upgrade to a high-end motherboard, the company is dramatically incentivizing you to return the original part. Expect to pay up to $4,222 for a new logic board, ouch! Have that on my credit card, but you’ll get the vast majority back when you return. You should end up paying $588 for a 16-inch MacBook Pro board, $500 for a 14- or 13-inch MBP board, or $368 for an M1 Air board, no matter how loaded it is.

You can also opt for Apple’s $49 tool rental, if you’re willing to give up the full purchase price in case you don’t return it within seven days. (This almost got me in trouble when i used one to fix my iphonesince my parts arrived days after the kit, and although I returned it on time, Apple initially reported it missing).
